Are we crazy to share before and after our wedding? YOU THEN. But the effort to improve our tiny bathroom was worth it! Now that we are newlyweds, we have a completely remodeled bathroom in our house. It’s pretty perfect! We used EasyCare Ultra Premium Paint from True Value to completely overhaul the space. They asked me to get creative, so I decided it was time to do a painting technique I’ve wanted to do for years… colorblock! Let’s dive into the first photos + the design process and more:

As I said yesterday, we plan to use the cabin as a vacation rental soon, so renovating the bathroom was a big deal for us. This means we are one step closer to listing. Plus, it’s nice to have a small space that feels like a work in progress! Our bathroom is a space that has faced many changes: we had to rebuild a completely destroyed wall and floor to renovate the kitchen and it was always in terrible condition.

And I can’t believe I put these images out into the world for everyone to see! As you know, our bathroom is very small. We’ve made a few updates to it in the four years I’ve lived here, like swapping out the broken vanity for a salvaged pedestal sink (

). We also removed the old school light and installed something more modern… but the electrical box doesn’t move so it’s not in the middle. We also took the old, broken medicine cabinet and threw away the old mirror I had in my old attic.

I can be very indecisive when choosing paint colors. I actually drew these 4 models about 2 months before we started the remodel because I wanted to live with them. It’s also helpful to see how each color changes based on lighting at different times of day. For me, this is the part of the design process that helps me be 100% sure about my paint color choice.

Armed with some really nice paint samples, I chose two colors of EasyCare Ultra Premium Paint: Maine Sky (

Bathroom Painting Tips You Should Know

). To color the walls and ceiling, I needed two colors that were similar but different enough to stand out from each other.

Surprisingly, it’s incredibly easy to paint the color block technique on your walls and ceilings! Just make sure you invest in quality and classy paint tape. I chose to match the edge to the top of the bump around our shower enclosure. It felt like a natural place to draw the line. Also, I like to use a darker color on the bottom if I’m going to color anything. Your eyes tend to see darker colors as “heavier,” so it’s more natural to have a lighter color on top.

Additionally, I chose to go with a Satin finish because it was the most forgiving option. Our house is really old and we don’t have a lot of time to resurface the drywall. We sanded it thoroughly and treated the holes before starting, but that was it. I was amazed at how smooth the walls looked!

I feel like choosing paint for the bathroom is a much more difficult process than choosing paint for anywhere else in your home. First of all, it’s a small space so the paint smell can be very strong. Second, the bathroom can be a heavily used space and requires a durable and moisture-resistant paint. We chose to use EasyCare Ultra Premium Paint from True Value because it solved those problems and more.

That last point cannot be emphasized enough, especially in a small space and a home with pets. EasyCare paint is also certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (

) as it reduces irritants and pollutants in the air to make it asthma and allergy friendly. While we were drawing, I was really surprised by a slight smell!

So what do you think about this before and after and the colorblock painting technique?? It was the fastest change we’ve ever done – and we did it a week before the wedding. But at the end of the day, it’s totally worth it. I’m working on another post about the smaller details like lighting, mirrors, etc. so remember to pay attention to those details! Most of us don’t think much about paint beyond its color, but there are chemicals in paint called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be toxic. VOCs are also found in paint strippers, primers, and household items such as carpets, upholstery, and some furniture.

New, environmentally friendly paints are called low-VOC paints, and they contain fewer volatile chemicals than conventional paints. The best low-VOC paint for you depends on the project you’re working on and the desired finish. Here’s what to keep in mind when buying low-VOC paint, along with our recommendations for some of the best options.

Low Voc Bathroom Paints

Before purchasing your paint project, it is important to understand the difference in the amount of toxic compounds found in low-VOC paints versus those classified as no-VOC.

Voc Paint Vs No Voc Paint: What’s The Difference?

With low VOC paint, there are no government guidelines for certifying low VOC paint. However, some manufacturers limit the amount of toxins in low-VOC paints to less than 50 grams per liter (g/L) for flat finishes and no more than 110 g/L for finished paints. not flat.

Manufacturers that follow those guidelines can have their paint products certified as GS-11 by the nonprofit Green Seal. Their paints can also earn GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification from UL, a non-profit safety organization; it indicates that it is tested annually and complies with voluntary low VOC standards.

No-VOC or zero-VOC paint products contain very few—if any—volatile organic compounds, but they can contain amounts up to 5 g/L. The color you mix for paint may contain small amounts of VOCs, but it is still one of the least toxic paints on the market.

Several zero-VOC paints are available from major manufacturers. You can also look for natural paints, such as milk paint, that don’t produce fumes.

Interior paint contains either oil or water, but the former contains more VOCs. Eco-friendly paints typically come in water- or latex-based formulations, with different factors to consider based on the nature of your project. Please note the following characteristics and features of paint before choosing:

Whether or not interior paint is durable depends on many factors; Note that color fastness (resistance to fading) is a separate topic discussed below.

Low-quality paint may contain cheap pigments such as talc, clay and silica and tends to fade over time. This is especially true if the painted surface is exposed to the South and receives direct sunlight. Dark colors fade more easily than lighter colors when exposed to sunlight.

Besides choosing the interior paint color, getting the right paint finish is also important. Paint finishes vary in visual impact and VOC content, making them more or less suitable for certain spaces:

Low Voc Paint Vs. No Voc Paint

Paints with harder, glossier finishes, such as gloss paints and enamels, have higher VOC content because these surfaces are created with toxic chemicals and solvents. You’ll find the lowest VOC options in flat paint and a growing number of satin and semi-gloss options.

Some disadvantages of low VOC paint are reduced coverage and longer summer periods. However, there are newer types that come with a primer for better coverage and quick drying. Paint manufacturers develop these eco-friendly paints, but you may experience longer drying times with some brands (up to several days for some milk paints) and expect a long wait. than to apply a second coat.

If you want to cover a dark wall with lighter-colored paint, you may need three coats of low-VOC paint for full coverage. Standard low-VOC paint coverage is 300 to 400 square feet per gallon of paint.

For optimal adhesion, the interior must be clean and dry because paint does not adhere well to wet surfaces. Any loose or peeling paint must be scraped off. Smaller projects, such as furniture, can be prepared using a paint stripper to remove existing paint. Covering nearby objects with drop cloths will protect them from debris, and using painter’s tape will help create clean, crisp paint edges.
